Elemental Supports Shark Spotters!

In an effort to make a difference, we have teamed up with Shark Spotters in 2022 to assist them in pursuing their vision of sustainable coexistence of people and sharks. 

Shark Spotters is a pioneering shark safety and research organisation that proactively reduces interactions and conflict between recreational water users and white sharks. 

Shark Spotters was founded in 2004, after a spate of increased shark sightings and shark bites. Now, in 2023, Cape Town’s beaches count on Shark Spotters as their primary shark safety strategy. 

Besides providing emergency response in the event of a shark incident, Shark Spotters also dives into applied research on shark behaviour and ecology and raises awareness about shark conservation issues and safety. In addition to, protecting people from potential shark attacks, Shark Spotters helps coastal communities by providing employment opportunities and skills development for shark spotters, of whom 95% live in under-resourced areas. 

Elemental's association with Shark Spotters can be traced back to the passion of our watersports-loving director, Jerry Diender. During one of his paddle boarding sessions in the picturesque waters of Fish Hoek and Muizenberg, Jerry witnessed the Shark Spotters in action, and their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of swimmers and surfers struck a chord with him. 

The dedication and vigilance exhibited by the Shark Spotters team in safeguarding the waters from potential shark encounters on shore and from lookout points on the mountain resonated deeply with Jerry. Over the last few years, Elemental became a Silver Sponsor of the NGO, driven by Jerry's personal experience and his admiration for the organization's mission to protect water enthusiasts and promote safe aquatic activities. Elemental was also motivated to support a local cause that was close to our hearts. As a company deeply rooted in the community, we recognised the importance of giving back and making a positive impact on our local environment. 

Our commitment to serving a greater purpose beyond our business operations is exemplified through our ongoing donation program in support of Shark Spotters. As a company deeply invested in the community and passionate about ocean conservation, we recognised the importance of actively contributing to the cause of keeping the waters safe and sharks protected. 

The decision to establish an ongoing donation program for Shark Spotters was fueled by the satisfaction of seeing the tangible impact that the organization makes in the coastal community. Witnessing the dedicated efforts of the Shark Spotters team in action, we take pride in knowing that our contributions are directly contributing to the safety of water enthusiasts and the conservation of marine ecosystems. It provides a sense of fulfilment and purpose, knowing that they are making a meaningful difference through their support.

Despite being limited to our offices and desks due to our commitment to serving our clients, we found other ways to meaningfully support Shark Spotters. While physical contributions may not have been feasible at this time, Elemental has taken the initiative to make a difference. We have purchased additional clothing from Shark Spotters for our team members to help raise awareness about the organisation and its mission. 

As a cutting-edge web development company, we know the difference good tech can make to a business. Elemental has donated a screen to Shark Spotters to aid them in their presentations, which came at a crucial time for the organisation. 

Our ongoing donations to the organisation will continue to help Shark Spotters finance the development and expansion of their team, and we are excited for the initiative to grow even more in 2024.
