Access to large scale community development and humanitarian service programs

The Rotary Action Group for Family Health and AIDS Prevention Inc (RFHA). Also known as RFHA Inc. develops and implements large-scale community development and humanitarian service programs, which provide preventative health care and education to children and families who normally can’t access them.

These programs are highly important and impactful, ensuring that communities receive free critical health screenings, testing and referrals to doctors or medical facilities for additional assessment or care.

Their vision is to save and improve the lives of children and families who lack access to preventative health care and education.

FUNDRAISING CAN BE CHALLENGING

Fundraising is generally a challenge for RFHA, especially from individual donors or sponsors. It is clear that philanthropic SMEs and individuals want to help in some way (financially or by other means) but they have no idea where to start.

They want to support projects that they can relate to in some way and the projects and programs that RFHA implement are no different.

The existing RFHA website was very outdated and only had basic functionality and limited donation capabilities.

A new, highly interactive website, packed with loads of valuable information for both donors and communities seeking assistance was desperately needed. Easier and better ways to receive donations were a definite must, as this is these donations are the heart of RFHA.

A NEW WEB PRESENCE WAS NEEDED

Elemental was selected as the web development agency to tackle the challenging task of redesigning and redeveloping the RFHA website. We really needed to breathe life into RFHA's web presence, which had been sorely lacking for many years.

These kinds of challenges really excite us as they test our creative and technical abilities and push us to come up with work that we can be proud of.

We really wanted to make the website look and feel quite different from the typical charity or donation-type website. As the work that RFHA does is quite serious, revolving around healthcare, we didn't want the website to be too serious and dreary.

A vibrantly bright and bold colour palette was adapted, in order to give the website a somewhat enlightened and fun feel. UX research resulted in the use of non-uniform block elements, to display content and media, which again is traditional from the norm.

Big, prominent call-to-action (CTA) buttons were strategically placed throughout the site to get users to engage in the donation process.

The development of the website comprised of both the public-facing website, which is based on the UX and UI designs generated in the design phase, as well as the development of the front-end functionality and finally the creation of a custom content management system (CMS), to allow the RFHA's staff to manage the content in a swift and easy way.

DONATIONS - MAKING AN IMPACT WHERE MOST NEEDED

As RFHA is a non-profit organisation, they are highly reliant on donations from the public. These donations can help maintain and expand RFHA's activities to ensure that healthcare is delivered to more people in underserved communities.

It was critical to provide the website user's with a simple yet sophisticated donation platform, in order to ensure funding was obtained through as fewer steps and as quickly as possible.

RFHA

The donation platform was powered by Give Finder (see accompanying case study). The entire donation user journey was designed to be highly simplistic, with donors having the ability to donate either as individuals or as a business.

Donations can be made as once-off donations or as recurring monthly donations. For donors who opted to donate monthly they will automatically have an account created, which they are able to access through a secure login and manage their donations and update their credit card details and personal information.

Donors have the option to donate via a Paypal account or directly with their credit card. Donations amounts can either be pre-selected or the donors can enter their own amount that they wish to donate.

All donations are done in three simple steps, with each step clearly marked to users, so that they know what is required of them and which step they're busy with at any given point in time. This was all done to process donations quickly and keep the user journey transparent for the donors.

SITES ARE WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPEN

As part of the booking process, we require users to digitally sign as a confirmation. This little feature was solved by implementing the Ionic Signature Pad.

RFHA currently operates in many African countries and in India too. Countries that adopt the Rotary Family Health Days will host these days at a multitude of venues or sites in a city or village. These Family Health Days comprise medical practitioners and facilities that are set up in order to host community members who are seeking medical attention.

RFHA

On the website, it's highly important to provide all stakeholders with information about these sites. Each site is unique (as they are all set up differently) and showcases a host of information pertaining to the ins and outs of that specific site.

A story and description are written about each site, which gives users an insight into what's happening at that specific site. Visitors are able to view all the health screenings that are offered at each site. Stats of the impact of the health day for that site are available, as are social sharing tools to share a specific site with friends and family.

Images of previous Health Days are depicted in an image carousel that visually showcases the day's events, allowing users to scroll through all images in an elegant way with hints of animation to make the user's engagement with the images a somewhat fun experience.

Crucial to the success of each site is its ability to generate donations. Strong call-to-action buttons are placed throughout the page to entice philanthropists and donors to make donations, which takes them through the donation process, where users can donate to a specific site.

INTERESTING FACTS

The donations can be made either with a credit card using the Stripe payment gateway or via Paypal, through a donor's Paypal account. Donations can be made either once off (there and then) or recurring monthly.

For each payment provider and each type of payment, we needed to develop the website to interact with the respective payment gateways, which was done through API integrations as well as webhooks that allow us to get notified when recurring payments are processed.

WE LOVE A GOOD CHALLENGE

A challenge that we knew would be key to the success of the website and specifically to the fundraising activities is how the donation process would work.

It was imperative that the process be so simple that even those who aren't computer literate could donate in a few quick and easy steps. To keep the donation process simple, we designed the donation steps to be no more than 3 steps, with each step clearly informing the user of what was required of them, as follows: choose your amount, enter your personal details, make payment.

However, there are quite a few intricacies that go on behind the scenes that are not obvious to the users, as this is based on what they choose in each step, meaning we take a user down a specific journey depending on what their selections are; however, the total steps will always be 3.

Another clever feature we added to the donation section was to remove the top navigation to prevent users from leaving the donation steps. They can, of course, use the footer navigation to get to other parts of the website, but the intention was to get as many donations as possible.
