Hospital patient experience survey results

Mediclinic is committed to providing the best possible care to its patients. To better understand their patient's experiences in their hospitals, they created a comprehensive patient experience survey, to gather valuable feedback.

This insightful data allows Mediclinic to understand and measure the experieces from a patient point of view. Aggregating this data to each hospital provided metrics with which hospitals can be compared to one another.

Now that they had the data and aggregated it in such a way that was easy to interpret, they needed a web based platform where all stakeholders could browse and view this data.

Making indicators and metrics fun to consume

Let's face it, hospital and medical data is not the most fun and interesting data set you'd want to consume in a hurry.

Don't get us wrong, the indicators and metrics gathered from the surveys are really insightful and very valuable when assessing the hospitals performance. Showcasing this information in an easily digestible and somewhat fun format is definitely going to get users to interact with it a lot more.

We wanted to allow the user to view the high level summaries initially for a hospital. This was done through a dashboard comprising of graphs and visual indicators representing the data in a somewhat ‘cute’ way.

Users are then able to dive down into each specific measurable for each hospital, for example how the admission process was, what the room was like, how they rated the doctor, etc.

The detailed results for each hospital consisted of overall scores and how many patients responded. Each metric is detailed in terms of what was measured to provide clarity on how the ratings work.

We brought in various pieces of animation to give the result slides movement and life. Slick popups allowed users to view additional information fast and animated videos were incorporated and used to visually explain each measurement in a light hearted way.

Other features available on the web platform include access to hospital contact details, FAQs and case studies.

Keeping the data updated regularly was done through the development of a custom Content Management System (CMS), allowing Mediclinic to load new batches of data through an intelligent upload tool, which would validate the data for accuracy and then store it.

All animated elements within the web platform are custom coded, to ensure they perform really quickly. We avoided the use of pre-built libraries to limit our dependence on third party code, we also didn't want to bloat the website and compromise on speed and performance.

WE LOVE A GOOD CHALLENGE

The data that is used for each hospital is uploaded into the custom CMS. This data is grouped into periods, so we needed to come up with a clever solution to allow us to preserve any data allocated to previous periods, yet cater for the data for this new period. Structuring the data uploads and the database in such a way that was scalable for the future was implemented, ensuring no risk to overwriting or compromising existing data.

This gave the Mediclinic staff the ability to change and update data as they wished without and development work needing to happen, talk about automation.
