Elemental was briefed by a local advertising agency to build the desktop (website) and mobile version of the Heineken Dropped web applications.

Heineken Dropped is an interactive campaign where people register via Facebook or Twitter. Once registered they are asked to watch various videos each week of four people who have been DROPPED in various locations. Each video has a question and multiple choice answer. Should the user answer correctly they would get a stamp in their virtual passport.

At the end of the campaign entrants who had a complete set of stamps in their digital passport would be entered into a draw, where four winners would be drawn. These winners would be dropped around Europe and would have to make their way back to the Heineken headquarters.

Each winner would have a full profile and a realtime integrated Twitter feed which would allow website users to monitor their progress as they travel to their destination.

The Dropped build process and technology

The website and the mobi site were built as separate platforms, due to the way users would interact with these two interfaces.

CodeIgniter was the web application MVC PHP framework of choice, due to its stability, speed and structure.

We integrated the websites with the Twitter and Facebook APIs, allowing users to register with their social media accounts and follow the winners through Twitter in real time.

The rest of the websites were custom developed due to the unique requirements such as the questions relating to each episode's video, the digital passport with the stamps, the promos and the winner biographies.

Both the website and mobile site were developed according to the client's requirements. The sites were cross browser compliant.

The campaign was hugely successful with a huge number of people participating throughout the lifespan of the campaign.

This resulted in huge exposure for Heineken as a brand as well as the campaign and websites being nominated for various awards within South Africa.

Interesting Facts

This project lived on the heineken.com domain and strict compliance to their platform and technology was required. We had to build several clever work arounds to ensure that the platform worked as per the client's vision within this environment.

Challenges

Facebook and Twitter's APIs were still in their infancy and not well documented and updated. This proved to be challenging but we were able to overcome this and complete the integrations successfully, through lots of trial and error.
