One Quiz,
One Blend,
One Very Happy Dog

BuddyMeal came to Elemental with a simple but ambitious idea: pet owners shouldn't have to guess which bag of food is right for their dog. Instead, they answer a short quiz about their dog's breed, age, weight and health needs, and an algorithm works out a personalised blend, delivered on a recurring subscription.

For a project like this, the MVP had to be more than a proof of concept, it needed to be a genuine foundation for a growing subscription business. Elemental proposed to develop the platform as a custom PHP MVC application rather than reaching for an off-the-shelf e-commerce template, precisely because a subscription-and-recommendation engine like this needed room to grow in directions no template could anticipate.

From the outset, the work was scoped as a project that would be delivered in phases. Phase 1 delivered the core platform: quiz, recommendation engine, subscriptions, an online store, reviews, jobs and blog content, all sitting behind a full admin dashboard with sales, registration and order statistics. Everything that followed was designed to build on that same foundation rather than bolt on separately.

Built Around Every Pet, Not Just Every Order

Most online stores are organised around products. BuddyMeal needed to be organised around pets. The admin section lets the team manage users, their pets and their subscriptions as linked records, so a single household with three dogs on three different meal plans is easy to see and manage as exactly that, a household, not three disconnected transactions.

Subscriptions carry their own logic: each one is tied to a specific pet's food blend, a repeat interval, and a cost, with admin able to see at a glance which users, pets and orders are linked to which subscription. Reviews, jobs, help videos and blog content round out the platform's public side, each manageable from the same CMS.

We built the front end around a fully responsive design, with particular attention paid to how the quiz and subscription flows behave on mobile, since most pet owners were expected to sign up, and manage their subscriptions, from their phones.

Loyalty, Referrals and Multi-Pet Households

Once BuddyMeal was live, we moved into a second phase focused on retention and household economics. A tiered loyalty programme now rewards subscribers automatically as they stay subscribed: half off the first order on day one, a free treat sample at three months, a permanent 5% discount at six months, and 10% off plus a free birthday box after a year.

For households with more than one dog, we built a multi-dog discount that stacks with loyalty up to a capped 25%, alongside a delivery synchronisation algorithm that works out the optimal single delivery date for every pet in a household, so multi-dog families receive one box instead of several arriving on different days. A referral system lets existing customers earn credit when friends subscribe using their code.

We also built a personalised bag label generator for BuddyMeal's fulfilment team, producing a print-ready label for every bag with the dog's photo, a blend breakdown pie chart, guaranteed analysis, ingredients and a QR code, alongside a downloadable, vet-shareable feeding plan PDF for every pet that meets FEDIAF nutritional compliance standards.

Getting the Right Bag to the Right Door

Subscription boxes rely on logistics, and BuddyMeal's delivery model needed to know, before a customer even finished signing up, whether their address could be serviced and what it would cost to get a box there. Rather than calling a courier's API for a live quote on every checkout, we built a postal code module directly into the platform, storing serviceable delivery areas and their associated fees internally.

That module ended up woven through far more of the platform than a simple shipping calculator would suggest. It validates addresses during customer onboarding and subscription creation, feeds into subscription and payment processing, drives future delivery scheduling, and gives BuddyMeal's admin team direct control over which areas are serviced and what they're charged, all without needing a live third-party lookup on every request.

For the courier side, we integrated with Bob Go to handle shipment creation, automated waybill generation, and saving the returned tracking reference against each order, so a customer's delivery is trackable from the moment their bag leaves the warehouse. Because Bob Go itself doesn't publish a fixed list of serviceable postal codes (it aggregates several courier networks with rates and coverage determined per address), we worked with BuddyMeal to import their own postal code list as a practical interim solution, keeping the platform's internal delivery logic intact while still launching on time.

INTERESTING FACTS

BuddyMeal's loyalty programme runs on autopilot: discounts unlock automatically the longer a customer stays subscribed, from a first-order discount all the way to a free annual birthday box.

Every bag of food leaves the warehouse with a personalised, print-ready label generated from that specific dog's or cat's data, complete with a QR code and a blend breakdown pie chart.

The platform's delivery synchronisation algorithm was purpose-built to solve a very ordinary problem: households with multiple pets no longer receive several separate deliveries in the same week.

Furthermore, the platform was launched to focus on dogs only, but very soon they will launch a pet food subscription for cat owners too!

CHALLENGES

The quiz-to-blend recommendation engine is the heart of BuddyMeal, and it needed to handle every realistic combination of a dog's health conditions and allergies, not just the common cases. The tricky part surfaced during testing: a dog flagged with every possible condition and every possible allergy at once is a scenario the algorithm has to recognise as unformulatable, rather than simply producing a best-effort blend from whatever ingredients were left.

Our developers had to work out the exact point in the logic where the engine should stop trying to formulate a recipe altogether and instead return a clear "we can't feed your Buddy" result, without that safeguard misfiring on dogs with a large but genuinely workable combination of conditions. A related challenge sat in how individual health flags fed through to the rest of the system.

A status like "slightly overweight," for example, needed to register correctly on the backend and carry all the way through to the generated feeding plan, portion sizes, and calorie guidance, rather than being captured in the quiz and then quietly dropped before it reached the formulation logic. Tracing these gaps meant testing the algorithm against deliberately extreme and edge-case dog profiles, not just typical ones, to be confident the engine behaved correctly across the full range of real-world combinations pet owners would actually submit.
