The Challenge: A Custom Solution for a Creative Portfolio
Hero Creative is a leading creative content production agency, representing an elite group of directors, photographers, and motion artists both in South Africa and internationally. Their existing website, built on WordPress, was limiting their ability to effectively showcase their artists’ work.
The primary challenges included:
-The need for a visually stunning website that aligned with their creative vision.
-Frustrations with content management, particularly in organising and rearranging large image portfolios.
-The requirement for high-resolution image display without compromising performance.
-A navigation structure that made it easy for users to explore their diverse portfolio.
Recognising these challenges, Hero Creative approached Elemental to develop a fully custom website that would bring their creative vision to life while ensuring a seamless user experience and effortless content management.

Bespoke Content Management & Image Handling
-Developed a multi-image selector tool, allowing administrators to efficiently reorder multiple images at once-eliminating the tedious process of moving them one by one.
-Implemented a dynamic masonry grid to intelligently adapt image layouts, ensuring no images were cropped or distorted, regardless of screen size or device.
-Integrated Vimeo and YouTube support for seamless video content management within their motion portfolio.
-Added a third-party magazine flipbook tool for an immersive blog content experience.
Performance & User Experience Enhancements
-Designed a visually compelling homepage grid that cleanly differentiates still photography and motion work, ensuring a balanced showcase.
-Built a custom grid layout for artist pages, providing a structured yet fluid way to browse through the talent portfolio.
-Developed a custom navigation structure, making it easier for users to explore different categories of creatives and their work.
-Optimised high-resolution media while maintaining site performance, achieving a 96% performance score on Google’s performance tests.

Throughout the project, one of the standout moments was seeing Hero Creative’s vision transition from static Figma designs to fully functional, interactive web pages. Features like the smooth sliding motion effects on the homepage added depth and engagement, making the final result even more dynamic.
While every custom project comes with its challenges, the end result was a website that not only met but exceeded expectations in terms of functionality, design, and performance. Hero Creative now has a robust, scalable digital platform that does justice to their exceptional portfolio of artists.

INTERESTING FACTS
To make the BLOG posts come alive and be highly interactive, turned them into a digital magazine with page flipping functionality and animation. While we didn’t code this ourselves, we were required to perform a third party integration into a 3rd party platform that offers the flipbook functionality, which once implemented, did the trick.
WE LOVE A GOOD CHALLENGE
There were two significant (but not impossible) challenges that we encountered, when developing this custom website.
The first was related to the integration of videos within the website. Initially we utilised the Youtube video player but this turned out to be somewhat restrictive when it came to how their branding was displayed in the videos. In order to overcome this issue we switched to Vimeo’s video player which turned out to handle this much better and was an effective solution to how the client wanted their videos to display and incorporate their branding.
As the site houses many uploaded images, it was imperative that these images are shown to the website visitors in the best way possible and consistently with the new design layout. Photo cropping was obviously a big no-no for the client and the images. Our solution? We opted for a dynamic and flexible masonry grid to adapt and showcase images of varying dimensions and sizes, without needing to change or crop any images.
