A Brand Reborn,
A Website
Reimagined
When Anglo American Platinum became Valterra Platinum in May 2025, the company needed far more than a name change. As the world’s largest primary producer of platinum, accounting for roughly 38% of global annual supply, the rebrand was a defining moment and the digital experience needed to match. The company operates a fully integrated value chain across South Africa and Zimbabwe, with marketing hubs in London, Singapore, and Shanghai. A business of that reach deserves a website that communicates scale, sophistication, and trust from the first click.
The existing website was dated and no longer reflective of a business of this calibre. Navigation was clunky, the design language felt disconnected from where the company was heading, and the site offered very little flexibility for the internal team to manage content. It was clear that a refresh would not be enough. The site needed to be rebuilt from the ground up.
Elemental was appointed to design and develop a completely new website within a tight four-month window. The brief was to deliver a modern, polished digital experience that would communicate credibility and confidence to investors, partners, and stakeholders around the world. It needed to reflect the weight of the Valterra Platinum brand while being practical, usable, and easy to maintain long after launch.
The timing added another layer of complexity. The rebrand had a fixed public launch date, and the website had to be live and fully functional to coincide with it. There was no room for delays, which meant the project required tight coordination, clear decision-making, and a team that could move quickly without cutting corners.
Designing for a Global Audience
Valterra Platinum’s website serves a diverse and sophisticated audience. Institutional investors and analysts need fast access to financial results, annual reports, and market announcements. Potential partners and suppliers need to understand the company’s operations, values, and scale. Job seekers need a clear picture of the culture and available roles. Each of these audiences arrives with different expectations, and the design needed to serve all of them without compromise.
We approached the design with a clear information hierarchy in mind. The navigation was structured to get users to the right content within one or two clicks, with key sections like Investors, Sustainability, Careers, and Media given prominent pathways. Page layouts were designed to balance visual impact with readability, using generous whitespace, strong imagery, and a typographic system that creates rhythm and guides the eye through long-form content.
We worked closely with brand agency HKLM throughout the design process to ensure that every visual decision honoured the new Valterra Platinum identity. From colour application and typography to imagery and iconography, HKLM’s input kept the digital experience tightly aligned with the broader brand rollout. Their involvement meant that the website did not just look good in isolation. It felt like a natural extension of everything Valterra Platinum was putting into the world.
The result is a design that feels considered and purposeful. It communicates the stature of a global mining leader without being heavy or corporate in the traditional sense. Every page was designed to earn trust quickly, present information clearly, and leave the user with a sense of confidence in the business behind it.
Built for Flexibility, Not Compromise
We built the website on the WordPress CMS framework with a fully custom theme developed from the ground up. This was a deliberate choice. Off-the-shelf purchased themes come loaded with bloated plugins, unnecessary features, and restrictions that slow performance and make long-term maintenance difficult. They often introduce security vulnerabilities and create dependency on third-party developers for even minor updates. A custom theme gave us complete control over structure, performance, and scalability, with flexibility built in from the start.
Every template, component, and layout was purpose-built for Valterra Platinum’s specific content needs. There is no dead code, no unused functionality, and no plugin overhead dragging the site down. The theme is lean, fast, and does exactly what it needs to do. This approach also means the client is not locked into a third-party theme developer’s update cycle or at risk of breaking changes when plugins conflict with one another.
We made extensive use of custom post types so that all content across the website is fully content-manageable by the Valterra Platinum team. Whether it’s investor updates, career listings, sustainability reports, or media releases, the internal team can publish and manage content independently without developer involvement. Each content type has its own structured interface in the WordPress admin, making it simple for non-technical users to keep the site current and accurate.
Importantly, the site was also architected with future expansion in mind. The foundation is ready to support 3D animation, multi-language functionality, and the potential integration of an AI-powered bot. These are not afterthoughts that would require a rebuild. They are planned extension points baked into the architecture from day one, ensuring the platform can evolve alongside the business as new requirements emerge.
Polished, Engaging, and Delivered at Pace
A corporate website of this calibre needs to feel premium without being heavy. We added carefully crafted transitions and animations throughout the site to create an experience that is engaging and slick. Scroll-triggered reveals, smooth page transitions, and subtle motion details bring the content to life and guide users through the site with a sense of purpose and momentum. Every animation serves a function. Nothing moves just for the sake of it.
The animation work was particularly important given the nature of the audience. Valterra Platinum’s website is visited by institutional investors, analysts, potential partners, and media. These users expect a level of polish that matches the stature of the company. At the same time, they need to find information quickly and without friction. The animations enhance the experience without getting in the way of usability, striking a balance between visual impact and practical navigation.
The entire project, from kickoff to launch, was completed in just four months. That is a demanding timeline for a website of this scope and complexity, particularly when factoring in the close collaboration with HKLM and the volume of content that needed to be structured and loaded. It required disciplined project management, fast turnaround on design iterations, and a development team that could build at speed without sacrificing quality.
The Valterra Platinum team was thrilled with the result, particularly given how tight the timeline was. The site now serves as the digital front door for a global mining leader. Modern, confident, and built to grow. It reflects the ambition of the rebrand and gives the company a platform they can be proud of for years to come.

INTERESTING FACTS
Valterra Platinum is a content-heavy marketing website with a wide range of sections, each with its own content requirements.
To give the client genuine control over every part of the site, we needed a CMS setup that went well beyond the standard WordPress editing experience. WordPress was the right foundation, but achieving proper content management capability required a more considered approach.
We used Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to build out structured, user-friendly content interfaces for every page and section of the website. Rather than presenting administrators with a blank editor and hoping for the best, each page type has its own clearly labelled fields, grouped logically so that non-technical team members can update content confidently. Whether it's swapping a hero image, updating a key statistic, or publishing a new sustainability report, the process is intuitive and does not require any knowledge of code or page structure.
Security was also a significant consideration given the size, visibility, and corporate nature of the website. A site representing a company of Valterra Platinum's stature is a natural target for malicious attacks, and standard best practices alone were not sufficient. We implemented additional security layers and checks to protect the website from external threats and to safeguard the CMS from unauthorised access. This included hardened login protocols, restricted access controls, and monitoring measures that go above and beyond what a typical WordPress installation provides. The goal was to give the client confidence that their digital platform is as secure as it is polished.
CHALLENGES
One of the key challenges on this project was the migration of legacy data from the previous website into the new platform.
Valterra Platinum had accumulated a significant volume of historical content, including reports, policies, media releases, and articles, all of which needed to be carried over. This was not a simple copy and paste. The data formats from the old site were different to the structures we had built for the new one, which meant every imported item needed to be reviewed and adjusted to ensure compliance with the new content architecture.
Beyond structural compliance, the imported content also needed to render beautifully within the new website's UI and UX. A report that technically displays on the page is not good enough if the formatting is inconsistent, images are misaligned, or the reading experience feels disjointed compared to the rest of the site. We treated the migrated content with the same level of care as newly created pages, making sure that everything looked and felt like it belonged.
Data checks were carried out continuously throughout the migration process. As content was imported in batches, the team reviewed each set for accuracy, formatting, and visual consistency. Where issues were identified, enhancements were made both to the data itself and to the website's templates to accommodate edge cases. It was an iterative process that required patience and attention to detail, but the result is a site where historical and new content sit together seamlessly, with no visible seams between old and new.
