HintHunt is a Cape Town-based company that creates exciting escape rooms and adventure games. One of their popular activities is The Amazing Race, located at the V&A Waterfront. It’s a fun, fast-paced game where teams race to complete challenges and solve puzzles, all while competing to be the first to finish.

Here’s how it works: Your team gets a map and a set of clues that guide you from one spot to the next. At each checkpoint, you’ll tackle a fun task, solve a puzzle, or crack a riddle to unlock the next location. It’s like a treasure hunt, but with the added thrill of competing against other teams.

The faster your team works together to solve the clues and complete the challenges, the closer you get to the finish line. The game is all about teamwork, quick thinking, and having a great time as you explore the beautiful Waterfront.

A MUCH NEEDED TECH UPGRADE

The Amazing Race’s tech platform, which both players and staff depend on for a smooth experience, had become outdated; which led to performance and stability issues.

This was problematic as it’s the backbone of the game, handling everything from guiding teams through clues to organising game logistics. The player app felt dull—plain and missing the excitement. For a brand as daring as HintHunt, the web app needed to capture the bold and energetic spirit of their games.

Elemental took on the challenge of building a fully custom interface from scratch—one that matches the excitement of the gameplay.

The result? Smooth gameplay and simplified management all in one, their upgraded platform powers an exciting, uninterrupted adventure for players and simplifies operations for staff.

DELIGHTING PLAYERS WITH A NEW WEB APP

Before starting the project, Elemental dove into the experience themselves, participating in the Amazing Race. Their firsthand experience guided the enhancements we implemented, including:

Hints for Questions: Players now have the option to accept hints in exchange for a time penalty if they’re stuck on a puzzle, adding a new layer of strategy to the race.

Race Timer: Teams can now see how long they’ve been racing—a simple but essential feature that was missing in the old app.

Progress Bar: We introduced a progress bar, allowing teams to track their position in the race and see how close they are to the finish line.

GPS Functionality Fixes: Our team ran into issues where the geo-location feature wasn’t working, preventing them from completing certain questions. This was a crucial bug to fix for smoother gameplay.

Every project has its challenges, and this one was no different. Here’s how we tackled the toughest obstacles:

Geo-Location Challenges: Poor signal issues led to GPS hiccups over WiFi during the race, creating a bit of a scramble. We quickly tackled this using a hybrid approach that combined offline maps with network triangulation—a smart technique that figures out your location by measuring distances to nearby cell towers.

This solution kept players connected without needing mobile data, successfully solving the problem and creating a smoother, more enjoyable gameplay experience for everyone!

Cross-Browser Media Support: We encountered a problem with videos not playing on Safari. Cross-browser compatibility is vital, so we had to find a solution. After some investigation, we discovered that converting videos to a web-optimised format solved the issue without needing to adjust the code.
